Car sales grew eightfold from the low in the period of 1998-2004, while motorcycles grew over nine folded. Both still grew at rapid rates through the first six months of 2005. Both car and motorcycle demand is expected to grow at sustainable rates of 5-10% p.a. for cars and a higher rate of 10-15% p.a. for motorcycles over the next four years.

Indonesia is one of the founding members of ASEAN and under the ASEAN free trade agreement, tariffs across ASEAN member by major global automaker, with the manufacturing platform catering across ASEAN countries even as an export base for non-ASEAN countries.
