Aquaculture Industry
Indonesia's position in global marketThe major global shrimp producers are China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. They accounted for 60% of the world’s total value of shrimp exports. Indonesia produced 10% of the world’s reared shrimp in 2001 and is the second largest exporter by value at USD885m. For the past 3 years to 2002, 70% of Indonesia’s shrimp production is exported and the remaining was consumed domestically to account for 1.5% of Indonesia’s exports. Shrimp farming in Indonesia is supported by its vast land of 8.7 million km2 with a coastline of 81,000 km, the second longest coastline only to Canada. Geographically, Indonesia is the largest archipelagic state in the world with more than 17,000 islands, spreading along the equator to provide 800,000 ha of potential brackish-water ponds with only 30% estimated being developed for shrimp culture. Indonesia’s largest shrimp producers, Dipasena Citra Darmaja(DCD), Wahyu Nimandia (WN) and Charoen Pokphand Group(CPG), operate in Sumatera. The companies mostly are located in Lampung province with estimated farm area of 30,000 ha. From the total farm area of 240,000 ha, 75% employs the traditional aquaculture method, 10% uses intensive method and the rest is semi-intensive. Traditional farming only produces a potential of 90,000 tones( 24% of total potential production) as compared to intensive method which potential yield 144,000 tones (38% of total potential production) or almost twice that of traditional method. As such, the conversion and development of farming method could boost Indonesia’s shrimp output and productivity.
